North Carolina Risperdal Lawyer

Gynecomastia (male breast enlargement) is a disfiguring side effect of Risperdal (risperidone). Many victims of Risperdal were prescribed the drug as children, before the FDA ever approved pediatric uses. In November 2013, Johnson & Johnson (J&J) was ordered to pay $2.2 billion for illegally marketing Risperdal to children. The Risperdal lawyers at Schmidt & Clark, LLP are now evaluating legal claims on behalf of North Carolina residents who were injured.

Studies of Risperdal and Gynecomastia

Numerous studies have linked Risperdal (risperidone) to an increased risk of gynecomastia. When gynecomastia affects young boys and teenagers, the side effects can be devastating — physical disfigurement, emotional trauma, painful surgeries, permanent scarring, and more.

Over 130 young men who took Risperdal and developed gynecomastia have filed lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson. These lawsuits accuse the drug-maker of failing to warn about the risk of gynecomastia. In fact, studies linking Risperdal and gynecomastia have been published since the 1990s:

Risperdal and Tardive Dyskinesia

Studies have found that at least 5% of Risperdal users develop tardive dyskinesia within one year. This condition is characterized by involuntary, repetitive movements in the face, hands, or other parts of the body. Unfortunately, there is no cure for tardive dyskinesia.

Tardive dyskinesia symptoms:

  • Facial grimacing
  • Finger movements
  • Lip smacking
  • Cheek puffing
  • Tongue thrusting
  • Jaw swinging
  • Repetitive chewing

Were Risperdal Side Effects Concealed?

Our lawyers are concerned that Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen Pharmaceutical unit may have illegally concealed risk information involving Risperdal. As part of a $2.2 billion settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), prosecutors unsealed documents showing evidence that clinical trial RIS-232 was withheld.

RIS-232 was completed in March 2003 but was not published until 2006. It showed that elderly dementia patients on Risperdal were more likely to suffer fatal cardiovascular events, including stroke. One researcher who sounded the alarm in 2004 warned:

“At this point, we must be concerned that this gives the strong appearance that Janssen is purposely withholding the findings from RIS 232.”
